N-O-T (Not on Tobacco) Facilitator Training

Not on Tobacco (N-0-T) is a tobacco cessation program serving regular smokers 14 through 19 years of age who are most likely addicted to nicotine. Based on social cognitive theory, the program trains youth in self-management and stimulus control, social skills and social influence, stress management, relapse prevention, techniques to manage nicotine withdrawal, weight management and peer pressure. The program’s 10-session curriculum can be delivered in a school or community setting and is designed to help youth:
• Stop smoking
• Reduce the number of cigarettes smoked
• Increase healthy lifestyle behaviors
• Improve life management skills

Facilitators, who range from school nurses to SAP counselors to guidance counselors to community members, must attend this one-day training. The materials provided include a
N-O-T Manual and tote bag, workbooks, a complete set of incentives and the use of recruitment resources. Once the facilitators are trained, the American Lung Association of Vermont provides on-going support. The N-O-T Coordinator will make site visits, offer assistance with administration, recruitment and other challenges facilitators may face as they implement N-O-T.
