Promoting Personal Health & Safety Through the Prevention of Injury and Violence

Independent Study by Permission of the Instructor - JTF, EdD. CHES

One academic credit is offered through the University of Vermont.

Instructional methods include online virtual meetings, readings, telephone and email communications.

DESCRIPTION
It is widely recognized that problems related to injury and violence are prevalent across all ages and in all cultures, impact physical, mental, social, environmental and spiritual health and wage significant costs to society. This course will be looking at these issues through the lens of American society and will consider personal change processes and environmental change strategies that are promising for promoting lifestyles that reduce the likelihood of injury and are free of violence. Co-factors, such as substance use, mental illness, and abuse will be considered, along with issues related to prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery. School and community policies that promote healthy and safe environments will be identified.

Participants apply the course teachings in a research paper focused on personal, school and/or community level interventions.

This course is designed as an Independent Study to satisfy the Personal Health, Disease, and Intentional and Unintentional Injury content areas for the Health Endorsement. Through the course design students will be obtaining concepts, knowledge and skills related to promoting personal health and safety through injury and violence prevention while contributing to the development of an online course on this topic that will be offered through the Vermont Higher Education Collaborative this fall and in the future to meet the needs of students seeking licensure and who require coursework on this topic.
