Prevention Ethics

Under a grant from the VT Dept of Health, Division of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Programs

Many times people who work in prevention are confronted with ethical dilemmas and are not aware that there is an established set of rules for prevention professionals. Using guidelines established by the IC & RC, the international body that certifies prevention professionals, this workshop will explore ethical principles and issues of confidentiality that apply specifically to persons working in this field. Role playing, discussion and didactic presentations will provide participants with better understanding of the role ethics plays in prevention. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to describe and apply the basic principles of the prevention code of ethics.

Sandra Puerini Del Sesto, M.Ed., CPPS (Certified Prevention Specialist Supervisor), has been a community planner, master trainer and program developer in alcohol and other drug prevention for over twenty-five years. She is a member of the prevention committee of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium. In addition she has conducted trainings nationally on a range of related issues including HIV prevention, school health, and programs that specifically address the needs of youth at risk. She has authored a K-12 curriculum in mental health and substance abuse as well as model programs for high-risk youth and refugee/immigrant parents and their children, which have been replicated statewide. Ms. Del Sesto was the lead author of RI’s Comprehensive Plan for HIV Prevention from 1996-2002. She is the Community Co-Chair of RI Youth Development Advisory Committee and a consultant to the Providence Safe Community Partnership. She is also on the faculty of the New England School of Prevention Studies and a Northeast CAPT Associate.
