Umatter Youth Suicide Prevention

Training of Trainers for Professionals, using the Connect model developed by NAMI NH

DESCRIPTION

You know that suicide is the second most common cause of death for young people aged 11 to 23 and you know your professional responsibilities for providing help and support to youth who might be depressed or suicidal. Now it’s time to take your expertise to the next level.

In this session you will gain the knowledge and skill to train others in your field about the incidence of suicide and what can be done to direct young people to the community services they need.

This Training of Trainers is based upon the Connect model of community intervention, a designated best practice program for youth suicide prevention. The goal of Connect is for Service Providers to become competent and confident in their response to suicidal incidents across the lifespan. You will learn to use a community-based approach to reduce the likelihood of suicide that involves early recognition and skill-building and to promote healing and avoid further harm following a suicide. As a nationally-designated Best Practice Program in the field of suicide prevention by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Connect provides specific professional protocols for responding to suicide attempts and threats.

You will learn to train other professionals about key service provider roles and responsibilities and how linkages are developed to facilitate improved communication, strengthen the safety net for individuals at risk, and enhance sustainability.

By the end of the two-day training you will have gained …
—Training in and familiarity with the Connect Prevention and Intervention Gatekeeper training, including Connect best practice protocols and materials
—Guidance and preparation for conducting a Connect training for coworkers or other identified community members focusing on best practice protocols for suicide prevention and responding to individuals who may be at risk or suicidal
—The ability to model a sensitive, safe and open approach to the subject of suicide
—Skills to implement the training while maintaining fidelity to National Best Practice Connect material
—Trainer feedback on presentation and fidelity to material to increase comfort level with presenting
—Certification as a Connect Trainer able to use Connect materials and train in the program
