ADAP Substance Abuse Prevention Training Series

DESCRIPTION
This two-day course is for professionals who have worked in the fields of prevention and/or health promotion for at least five years. It will provide practitioners with the most current information available as we move into a more global arena of practice, i.e. behavioral and public health. It will also provide additional information and skills in the areas of the Strategic Prevention Framework.
Topics to be covered include:
1. The 2009 Institute for Medicine Report: Implications for current and future prevention practice 2. Prevention and collaboration in the context of public health, health reform and recovery-oriented systems of care 3. The Steps of Strategic Prevention Framework: Additional tools for the advanced practitioner
In addition to information and skill building, the training will provide opportunities for sharing lessons learned. Come to learn, to share and to be energized! This is a challenging yet exciting time in our field!

The Trainer: Sandra Puerini Del Sesto, M.Ed, CPSS
Sandra Puerini Del Sesto is the founding director of the Institute for Addiction Recovery at Rhode Island College. She is also the founder and past executive director of Initiatives for Human Development, the only statewide prevention agency in Rhode Island, and a founder of CODAC, a statewide treatment program. For over thirty years, Ms. Del Sesto has provided throughout the United States training, community and strategic planning, program development, and capacity building in all areas of prevention practice. She has worked extensively at both the community and state levels developing strategic prevention/behavioral health care plans and has also developed curriculum and programs for high-risk youth and families as well as instructional guidelines for substance abuse and mental health education. Ms. Del Sesto is also the founder of the Rhode Island Teen Institute and a co-developer of Parents Are Teachers, a program targeting low-literacy immigrant parents, both Service to Science. She is a trainer for the Center for the Application of Prevention Technology and a member of the faculty and board of directors of the New England School of Addiction Studies. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), the international organization that certifies professionals working in the field of addictions, including prevention. Sandra is a co-author of the Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST) and has been a SAPST instructor for over 15 years. She received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston College (Newton), and her Master’s degree in counselor education from Rhode Island College and also completed a certificate program in non-profit management through Brown University in Providence. Ms. Del Sesto is a certified prevention specialist supervisor.

As a CHL training attendee, overnight lodging is available at the training location at a reduced rate of $104.00 per night.
