Life Skills Training

This two-day training prepares participants to use the Life Skills Training curriculum in grades 3-9. The LST program was developed by Dr. Gilbert J. Botvin, a leading expert on drug abuse prevention, for middle or junior high school students. It consists of 15 classes that can be implemented in the first year of middle school (usually the 6th grade) or the first year of junior high (usually the 7th grade). The program includes five major components, which consist of two to six lessons and are designed to be taught in sequence. The LST program is designed to:

  • provide students with the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressures to smoke, drink and use drugs,
  • help them to develop greater self-esteem, self-mastery, and self-confidence,
  • enable children to effectively cope with social anxiety
  • increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance use.

The LST program also includes a booster curriculum consisting of 10 classes in the second year of middle or junior high, and 5 classes in the third year.

A new version of the LST program, suitable for upper elementary school students, has recently been developed. It contains material for a total of 24 classes (8 classes per year) to be taught during either the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades or the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

Training Goals:
  • to familiarize participants with the LST program, in theory and practice
  • to review all curriculum components and skills taught in the LST program
  • to identify and practice critical teaching techniques
  • to prepare effective implementation strategies to optimize LST outcomes

  • reviewed and critiqued Botvin’s “Life Skills Program”

  • observed, practiced teaching, and critiqued lessons featuring facilitation skills
  • networked and planned implementation of lessons with other participants
Day Two Objectives:
By the end of Day Two, participants will have:
  • observed, practiced teaching and critiqued lessons featuring the skills of coaching and behavioral rehearsal (role play)
