WCYC YOUTH SUMMIT 2006

This year’s Youth Summit is entitled Love What You Are – Respect What You’re Not. WCYC hopes to inspire youth to believe in themselves and learn how to appreciate other’s differences’. This event is also designed to give youth a chance to gain leadership skills and see how they can be active in helping make their community a better place for teens.

GUEST SPEAKER: DOUG WILHELM

Doug Wilhelm is a full-time, self-employed writer who lives in Rutland, Vermont and has written 11 novels for young adults. His most recent is The Revealers, a book that addresses the issue of bullying in middle school. This book has been the focus of reading and discussion projects in over 75 Vermont schools. Doug has also covered Vermont for The Boston Globe, written the words on Ben & Jerry’s ice cream containers, and worked as an English teacher and freelance writer in Kathmandu, Nepal. He has one son, Bradley, who is 19.

A Change Will Do You Good
Presented by: Windham County Youth Council
If you had the power, what would you change? This workshop will help you think critically about issues in your school and community and how you, as a young person, can make change happen. You will also learn more about WCYC and how to get involved.

Youth-Initiated Grants
Presented by: Youth Initiated Grants & Alliance for Building Community
Do you want to do something important in your community? Does your group of friends want to create a project together? Need some money to make it happen? WCYC’s Youth Initiated Grants committee manages a $20,000 grant fund for youth projects. Come to this workshop to hear from youth who have prepared and reviewed successful grants. You will also have time to consider your own ideas for a future proposal.

The Power of Symbols
Presented by: ALANA Community Organization
In this thought provoking workshop you will learn the history of the Confederate Flag, Colonel Rebel and the role both play in perpetuating racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia and social injustice.

Love What You Are, Respect What You’re Not – Through Art
Presented by: Windham County Youth Council
What is self-love and mutual respect? Come contemplate this question, listen to music and express your thoughts through art.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
Presented by: AWARE Multicultural Peer Education Group
Come discuss ways to embrace building relationships with the diversity of people around you. This experiential workshop will help you understand how to be a part of an effective multicultural team while giving you skills to work in your community.

Fighting Against Child Labor in Our World
Presented by: CLEA (Child Labor Education Action)
This workshop will include a presentation of the history of CLEA, information about child labor, and CLEA’s current SweatFree Campaign. You will learn about ways to start your own CLEA group and how to advocate for a SweatFree school or town.

LGBTIQQA: The Queer 101
Presented by: Outright Vermont
What is sexual orientation? What is gender identity? Come gain a better understanding in this fun and interactive workshop. You will walk away with knowledge of basic vocabulary and definitions as well as the differences and connections between one’s sexual orientation and gender.

Above the Influence
Presented by: Students Against Destructive Decisions
Being above the influence is about being yourself and not letting people pressure you into being anything less than you. Through a media display and experiential activities you will explore the messages you receive about using drugs and alcohol and learn how to deal with these positive and negative influences.

Origami
Presented by: Guilford School Art Department
Learn about origami as an art form and practice making paper boxes and cranes.

Hip-Hop /Break dance
Presented by: B-Boy Class
The B-Boy Class includes two seasoned dancers who will teach you the basics of break dancing as well as the history of hip-hop culture.

Using Your Whole Brain
Presented by: Guildford Middle School
How do you learn best? This workshop will help you understand your “learning style.” Do you learn through seeing, hearing, or do you need to walk or talk through your ideas? Using fun and interactive approaches, you will discover different ideas of how to learn and remember things in a way that works best for you.

Making the Comedy Connection*
Presented by: Robin Zegge and The Comedy Connection
Rising to new heights of popularity, thanks to Drew Carey and “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” Comedy Improvisation comes to the Youth Summit! Through theater games participants will create short comic scenes together using characters, situations and audience suggestions. No experience is necessary to enjoy this workshop. Just come prepared to have fun and laugh a lot! Some participants may join in the afternoon Improv Show with The Comedy Connection.

Cost: FREE for all YOUTH!!

Suggested donation of $15 for ADULTS to cover the cost of lunch. Please make checks payable to United Way of Windham County with WCYC Youth Summit in the memo

Registration: Space is limited. Please REGISTER EARLY. The registration deadline is March 31, 2006.

TIPS FOR REGISTERING:
1. An email address is needed to register. If you do not have an email address please use wcycyouthsummit@hotmail.com.

2. While registering you will be asked for an organizational role (under personal information). Youth should choose “other” and in the next line type “student”.
